Abstract

As a child, I grew up learning piano with an approach where technical exercises and mastery of repertoire through reading was prioritized over aural training and sight reading. In my own teaching as a young professional, I wanted to explore an alternative approach to learning the piano that would be more holistic to the student and incorporate aspects of the Kodály Method which focuses on building a strong musical foundation through singing, vocalizing rhythms, and body movements. This study aims to test the effectiveness of applying the Kodály Method primarily designed for group music classes to conventional private piano lessons, and there is currently very little research to explain how that might be done. I began with a traditional-narrative literature review to examine the Kodály Method and consider what could be incorporated in the private lesson. Classroom observations of Kodály group music classes were studied and based on these findings, I designed and tested a new curriculum for private piano lessons. Through the integration of these two approaches, this study will provide new contributions that will be beneficial to the field of music education. Keywords: The Kodály Method, private piano lesson, classroom observation.
