dc.description.abstract | The objective of this study is to provide some insight of the stress distributions in hollow masonry at working stress levels. Three-dimensional stress analyses of grouted and ungrouted concrete block prisms, concrete block walls and clay brick walls are presented. The effects of several factors including grouting, mortaring style, capping , platen constraint, quality control of mortar stiffness and vertical joint size, brick height, shell taper of concrete block and core alignment of walls constructed in running bond are investigated. Some indications of certain failure mechanisms are found. The stress distributions in ·a stack bonded prism and a running bond wall where the cores of the units do not align are substantially different. Specific changes in the core profile of concrete blocks are shown to be advantageous. Significant improvements in the performance of walls constructed in running bond are found when the cores are aligned . The quality control of mortar is shown to be important. | |
