Retrieved from https://prism.ucalgary.ca.https://hdl.handle.net/1880/11805010.11575/PRISM/42894Shuyo Nella is a five-movement symphony with a duration of sixteen minutes and instrumentation of double winds, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, and strings. It is inspired by the archetypes of family relationships as well as by aspects of my Turkish heritage. The archetypes are presented as the thematic material of this character piece. Research on various twentieth-century approaches to a symphonic composition that includes programmatic/character elements and cultural synthesis influenced the musical ideas. The thesis comprises an essay that explains the research, thematic materials, harmony, rhythm, form, texture, and timbre, as well as a bibliography and a complete score.enUniversity of Calgary graduate students retain copyright ownership and moral rights for their thesis.
