For the discussion of beauty on an architectural level, a laser eye surgery clinic was chosen as the basis for design. It was seen as an architectural intervention that examined both traditional and present day understandings of physical beauty and their manifestations. It also examined the ideas of medicine, it's changing role in society, self image, body image, building and landscape. Beauty as an idea has transcended the boundaries of time and space, being a link binding all human-kind together. The only real changes that have occurred over time are; what is considered beautiful and, what sorts of interventions occur to create that beauty. Through technological advances', mankind has been able to affect beauty in more invasive ways. Traditionally, topical appliques were used to enhance physical appearance. Presently, more invasive methods of surgery are used to affect the individual. As people are willing to go to greater lengths to affect their physical appearance it is obvious that there is a strong relationship between physical beauty and mental well being. It is important that the issue of beauty be addressed as it is seen as an important cultural issue. It is this importance that will cause the issue to pervade other areas of society and culture,. Because this issue will become intertwined within other areas of culture it is important that this topic get appropriate study and thought.<vi>, 25 <24> leaves ; 30 cm.engUniversity of Calgary graduate students retain copyright ownership and moral rights for their thesis.
