The main purpose of this study was to examine the hypothesis that increases in the availability of legalized gambling lead to increases in the prevalence of problem gambling. A large sample of Iowa residents aged 18 and over (N=1,500) were interviewed in February and March, 1995 about the types of gambling they have tried, the amounts of money they spend on gambling, and about gambling-related difficulties.
