The off-axis nature of the six beams gives rise to asymmetric side-lobe patterns. The construction of an image by using the multi-beam data results in the presence of side-lobe artifacts in the image which are unique for each compact source depending upon the way the telescope scans across it. Removal of these side-lobe artifacts requires accurate models of the seven ALFA beams and a modification of the Hogbom CLEAN algorithm. This algorithm has been named multi-beam CLEAN and was developed and implemented using the Galactic ALFA Continuum Transit Survey (GALFACTS) precursor data-set. The results of the implementation were successful and have been used to CLEAN side-lobe artifacts from the precursor images.x, 106 leaves : ill. ; 30 cm.engUniversity of Calgary graduate students retain copyright ownership and moral rights for their thesis.
