The design and performance of the triaxial loading apparatus is described, the lateral pressure being applied hydrostatically while the longitudinal stress is applied mechanically through a balanced piston. The concrete strain was measured using calibrated internal strain gauges. The results of tests on 72 specimens, indicating the influence of the lateral confining pressure on the ultimate compressive strengi:h and strain of concrete and on the fatigue behaviour of concrete unde high (maximum) longitudinal compressive stress levels are presented. The results indicate that the fatigue life under lateral confining pressure is prolonged, depending on the maximum stress level of the fatigue loading.xi, 87 leaves : ill. ; 30 cm.engUniversity of Calgary graduate students retain copyright ownership and moral rights for their thesis.
