Item Open Access A unified analysis of the bei and the ba constructions in Chinese(1996) Wang, Xiao Jun; Guilfoyle, EithneIn this thesis, we propose a unified analysis of two long-disputed structures in Chinese: the bei and the ha constructions, which exhibit a number of unexpected properties given standard assumptions with respect to passivization and Case theory since: i) the bei passive cannot suppress the verb's Case and theta-role assigning abilities; ii) the Agent DP is not demoted; iii) DP movement does not occur to satisfy the Case Filter. It is shown that many of the puzzling properties in these constructions, especially the unusual word order, can be treated as consequences of some general principles. While the standard analysis of passivization is challenged, strong empirical evidence is found favoring the VP-Internal Subject Hypothesis, the UTAH (Baker 1988), the proposal that DP movement occurs to satisfy the requirement that a Case assigner discharge Case (Fukui and Speas 1986), and that a chain may receive more than one Case feature.Item Open Access Aspect and the organization of argument structure and phrase structure: evidence from Malay(1994) Soh, Hooi Ling; Guilfoyle, EithneThis thesis investigates the role of aspect in the organization of Argument structure and Phrase structure. We propose that aspectual roles are linked with the theta roles of the arguments in Argument structure. On the basis of constructions with the ter- prefix and the -kan suffix in Malay, we argue that it is possible to delink or add an aspectual role to a given argument. The delinking and adding mechanisms enable us to provide a unified account of ter- and -kan and permit finer operations on arguments. We also associate the aspectual roles with the projections of Phrase structure. We argue for an aspect phrase outside VP based on the prefix ter- and certain aspectual markers. We show that the outer aspect identifies the occurrence of the event, and whether the outer aspect is filled or not is determined by the aspectual tier of the verb's argument structure.Item Open Access Ergativity and agreement in Jacaltec(1993) Isaak, Andre G.; Guilfoyle, EithneItem Open Access Expanded project alpha theory and Chinese word order(1995) Chan, Wing Chiu; Guilfoyle, EithneItem Open Access Syntactic theory and linguistic research(University of Calgary, 1994-01) Guilfoyle, EithneI have recently started working with data from young language-disordered children, a population who have received very little consideration from linguistics as a whole, and almost none from those working in a generative framework. In what follows I will discuss a few issues within each of these three areas that most interest me, because they all bear on the central questions of how many syntactic categories there are in natural language, how they are combined, and how children acquire them.Item Open Access The licensing of Russian possessives(1995) Durrant, Philip Michael; Guilfoyle, EithneItem Open Access The role of initiation point in the distribution of root infinitivals in the acquisition of German(1997) Thrift, K.
