I also survey the development of sport studies, situating my research within almost a century of scholarship on play, games and sport. I account for these developments with an overarching interest in continuity and change, considering the processes and events that deliver particular historical moments, and the ways in which the past becomes a resource for the future. Throughout, I explore relationships between people, practices, ideas, material objects and formal organizations. In so doing, I draw on classical oppositions within social theory and the study of sport, such as structure and agency, or ritual and record. These contradictions serve as productive tensions, enabling and enriching one another, and framing the specific transformations of times, spaces and bodies that I document. Lastly, I conclude by offering some commentary on sport as it relates to play, routine practice and modernity, arguing that for those who chase giants, both their work and their world remains unfinished.Item Open Access Drilling rig workers in Alberta: folk models of economics in the oilfields(2010) Houser, Dan E.; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Open Access Education paths of Greenlandic youth: educational migration among young people in northwest Greenland(1996) Bock, Sandra; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Open Access Ethnography of a lost world: a Prussian junker family, 928-1993(2009) von Graevenitz, Heidi; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Open Access Exchanging life: managing medical uncertainty in the treatment of end-stage renal disease(2006) Jacobs, Sarah Elizabeth; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Embargo Friends and colleagues: Muslim women(1982) de Gruchy, Caroline M., 1957-; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Open Access In its own right: native Canadian art today(1989) Storm, Sandra K.; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Open Access Kinship, distance, and obligation: a study of Sudanese immigrants in Calgary(2006) Leng, Deng Akol Kuot; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Open Access Making lengwasa: analysis of a women's pig-killing ritual on Maewo, Vanuatu(1982) Hume, Lynne; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Open Access Meibutsu in Banff: the structuration of a Japaneses tourist destination(1991) Rouse, Sandra L.; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Embargo Men with a mission: Canada's Indian administration in the North-west, 1873-1900(1980) Richardson, Nelson Andrew; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Open Access Models of market peace: the case of a Bedouin suq in Israel(1991) Janzen, Cynthia Marie; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Open Access Patronage and class in Kenya(1990) Havers, Linda I.; Hatt, Doyle G.Item Embargo Political anthropological analysis of a northern Canadian community(1982) Legat, Allice; Hatt, Doyle G.
