Item Open Access Ilustraciones interpretativas: espacios, repetición de imágenes y animales en cien años de La Celestina: Ediciones españolas de 1500 a 1600(2018-09-06) Kowalsky, Lisa Marie; Schmidt, Rachel; Brown, Kenneth; George, Angela; Palacios, JoyThis thesis contains a visual analysis and interpretation of the illustrations contained in fourteen editions dating from the year 1500 to 1600 of La Celestina, the famous literary work written by Fernando de Rojas (1499/1502). This thesis examines the visual narrative they provided by the illustrations for the reader, how they are used and reused within the different editions from different printers, time periods and cities, and how they interact with and impact the text. In examining the illustrations, I argue that they offer a way to interpret ideas about space and its reflections of societal beliefs surrounding appropriate spaces and interactions between genders, how repetitive representations of the characters also indicate beliefs and judgements about them made by society and the printers of the editions themselves, and how these illustrations can reflect the political events of the time. An additional examination of images that are incongruous with the text and additions made by the printers and/or illustrators, such as, added representations of animals, or unflattering representations of the main characters, allows for an expanded interpretation and understanding of various scenes in this iconic literary work.
