In taking this question up, I look to the work of Plato, Irigaray and Hegel, who each identify a problem of oppression and respond to it through a model of non-oppression as participation, sharedness and unity, respectively. Through an exploration of each thinker’s model of non-oppression, I show that we gain two central insights: i) a new way of thinking about the self, which brings new ways of relating to others into being, and ii) the conditions required to bring this self, and non-oppressive relations with others, into being. Motivated by a concern for how we can be ourselves with another in love, I then consider the limitations of each model in relation to this concern.
