Item Open Access Beyond the Bibliographic: Making the most of free scientific and technical information(2008-08-12) MacMillan, DonItem Open Access Evolving instruction in biology: using the web to improve in-class instruction(Emerald, 2004) MacMillan, Don; Lee, JenniferMuch debate in the library literature has focused on the effectiveness of web-based or online instruction versus traditional face-to-face library instruction. While both forms of library instruction have their strengths and weaknesses, the authors contend that a hybrid approach to information literacy instruction, by bringing the web into the classroom, offers students and instructors the greatest benefit. The authors’ experience with the evolution of instruction sessions for 1,100 first-year biology students from PowerPoint presentations to web-based courseware (WebCT) to its current web-based format illustrates the improvements to instruction that have accrued as the program has developed. These include the ability to address diverse learning styles, encourage active participation, provide 24/7 access, and foster increased student contact with librarians.Item Open Access Getting everyone on the same page: A staff focus group study for library web site redesign(Emerald, 2007) MacMillan, Don; McKee, Susan; Sadler, ShawnaItem Open Access Google Scholar: What do you need to know?(2006-11-16T16:20:41Z) Thomas, Chris; MacMillan, DonItem Open Access "I Wouldn't Have Asked for Help if I had to go to the Library": Reference Services On Site(Association of College and Research Libraries, 2004) Lee, Jennifer; Hayden, K. Alix; MacMillan, DonStudents may be reluctant to ask questions at a library reference desk because it is such a public venue. It may be possible to give them an alternative by providing reference services outside of the library within a faculty lab or office. Advantages include convenience and proximity to students, faculty, and their learning communities. The service may also foster closer and stronger relationships with departments. It is important to choose a location wisely, as well as advertise widely. This paper examines the provision of reference services outside of the traditional library environment, and describes two initiatives involving librarians for the Faculty of Nursing and the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary.Item Open Access "I Wouldn't Have Asked for Help if I had to go to the Library": Reference Services On Site(Association of College and Research Libraries Science and Technology Section, 2004) MacMillan, Don; Lee, Jennifer; Hayden, K. Patents and patent applications usually contain the first disclosure of new technologies and processes and serve to link theory with practice, providing ‘real world’ examples of the application of scientific research. Increasingly, scientific discoveries are reported first in the patent literature, rather than in academic journals. To ensure that science students have the skills that match the information resources they will use as professionals, patent searching must become part of their information literacy instruction. This article will discuss how valuable the patent literature can be to students, and how to incorporate patent searching into library instruction. By way of illustration, a case study will document how students in one class, Biochemistry 561, were introduced to patents.Item Open Access University Library Website Post-Redesign Usability Study Report(2006) Hayden, K.
