Item Open Access Public space in the new suburban city(2012) Onyszchuk, Christopher Robert; Boutin, MarcSince the Second World War, uninhibited sprawl has transformed the urban fabric of North American cities. Suburbs are now the home of the middle class, removing citizens from urban centers and placing them on the suburban periphery. As a result, public life is diluted and the benefits of strong community bonds are diminished. Suburbanization has produced neighborhoods that both passively and actively isolate and segregate i??dividuals from their environments and communities. This Master's Degree Project investigates the built environment's ability to condition socially constructed public space within suburbia. Through a series of investigations that integrate architecture and urban planning, I argue for a reprogramming of suburbia that facilitates the production of viable public spaces. By providing a plethora of amenity programs and places of work, suburbia can be adapted to facilitate a better future.
