Item Open Access Examining the Utility of Constructing Physical Representations of Data(2017) Payne, Jennifer; Willett, Wesley; Johnson, Jason; Sharlin, Ehud; Wylant, BarryFor millennia, people have constructed physicalizations---physical representations of information---by hand. Recent studies have shown that physicalizations can be more efficient for transmitting information than on-screen visualizations. In addition, innovations like shape-changing interfaces and digital fabrication now make it possible to create physicalizations with little manual effort. Yet many physicalizations are still constructed by hand. In this thesis, we explore how manual construction of physicalizations influences the way people approach and comprehend data, through two studies. One study compares bar chart authoring through physical construction to authoring using template-based chart creation software. A second study compares participant behaviour when constructing physicalizations to that when exploring previously-built physicalizations. Through comparison of these processes, we derive implications for the design of visualization authoring tools, and for the exploration of data.Item Open Access Student Learning Behaviours in Informal Learning Spaces(2016-06-22) Beatty, Susan; Payne, JenniferThis poster outlines a qualitative study undertaken in 2016 to determine the relationship between student learning behaviours in the informal learning spaces of the TFDL and the space design. . Students were interviewed regarding their perception of the open library spaces in relation to the learning activities they needed to undertake. The goal of the study was to determine the features in open learning spaces that assist students in their learning. This poster presents an overview of the research and preliminary results.Item Open Access Student Learning Behaviours in Informal Learning Spaces in the Taylor Family Digital Library(2016-05) Beatty, Susan; Payne, JenniferTo investigate student perceptions of the TFDL learning spaces, an study was conducted in winter 2016. The study involved: semi-structured interviews with 21 participants, roughly 45 minutes each, and included questions on: •students’ learning styles, •learning activities in the library •locations in which they performed these activities and why •their ideal learning space •preferences based on 15 photos of TFDL spaces The interview transcriptions were analyzed via open and axial coding, using NVivo software. Results are preliminary. Our poster highlights some student views on spaces in TFDL as they relate to their learning behaviours.Item Open Access Student Learning Behaviours in Informal Learning Spaces in the Taylor Family Digital LIbrary(2016-05) Beatty, Susan; Payne, JenniferTo investigate student perceptions of the TFDL learning spaces, an study was conducted in winter 2016.
