Item Open Access A Comparative study of two pulse width modulation techniques(1989) Rajakaruna, Rajakaruna Mohotti Appuhamilage Sumedha; Barton, Thomas H.As a help in selecting a PWM technique for a given application, a comparative study of the performance of a three-phase induction motor is made for current hysteresis modulation and conventional sinusoidal voltage modulation. Frequency domain analysis as normally applied for sinusoidal voltage modulation using the Fourier series representation of the waveforms is inapplicable for the analysis of current hysteresis modulation, because the waveforms are aperiodic. Since the switching instants of the current hysteresis modulated inverter can only be determined from a time domain analysis, a time domain technique using the system eigenvalues is applied for the analysis of both PWM strategies. The comparisons made for average values of torque and power loss, waveforms and spectra of line currents and e.m. torque for various operating conditions lead to the conclusion that highly variable inverter switching frequency of current hysteresis modulation brings many adverse results and thereby make it inferior to the sinusoidal voltage modulation.
