    Understanding Best Practices in Exhibit Design to Improve Learning of Evolutionary Biology in Non-formal Education Facilities in Alberta

    This project explores the teaching of evolution in non-formal education centres in Alberta. It aims to define goals for evolution education in non-formal science learning spaces (museums, zoos, science centres, and aquariums), examine the unique nature of free-choice learning, and initiate a dialogue on best practice between exhibit designers, collections managers, and educators. The project examines the literature on evolution education and non-formal science education, fosters dialogue with participants that are employed in exhibit design and education, and observes exhibits in facilities across North America. I advocate for inclusion of interpretive pedagogy and interactive exhibit styles that are rooted in inquiry and creativity and use the resources at hand to illustrate evolution principles in a manner that addresses barriers to evolution understanding, is accessible and relevant to diverse visitor audiences, and is targeted at mission-based goals related to the specific facility.
