Gaps in the record, short time lines and limited resources require creative solutions from archivists so that the expectations of Survivors, researchers and the media are met. The 2006 "Protocols for Native American Archival Materials have named "consultation" as a key value. This paper will examine the extent to which as process gro9unded in the Protocols could help archivists meet opportunities the TRC sets before us.

In the United States the Tribal Libraries, Archives and Museums conferences and projects are better established. This paper discusses how the American and Canadian experiences are directing us to think differently about how First Nations archives can develop as authentic and self-governing participants in the ongoing work of Healing and Reconciliation.
