- ItemOpen AccessTranslation and interpretation: three English versions of Die Judenbuche(1996) Roe, Heather; Enns, EstherThis thesis explores how translational shifts affect the interpretive possibilities harboured by, and the literary quality of a series of, translations of a single text. This investigation is pursued by means of a case study in which three English translations of Annette von Droste-Hulshoff's Novelle, Die Judenbuche (1842), are analyzed. The analysis of the translations employs both a close reading of the original and its reception history to provide the standard against which the English texts are evaluated. The framework for the evaluation thus established, the translations are discussed in terms of their aesthetic quality and their interpretive potentiality in comparison to the original. Based on these criteria, the analysis of the three English versions of Die Judenbuche reveals that translational shifts in most cases significantly affected the possibility of deriving the same meanings from the translation as were derived from the original in its history of reception.
