G.This thesis describes the design and implementation of a Faculty Wide Information System (FWIS) for the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Calgary. The World Wide Web (WWW) was used as a platform for the development of this system. The unfolding of the WWW project is presented in its historical and social context, and the original WWW proposal is examined in detail. The technologies underlying the WWW are discussed and a mapping is produced between the WWW and the Dexter Hypermedia Model with a view to formalising a description of the medium. The advantages, disadvantages, strengths and limitations of the WWW as a vehicle for information dissemination are enumerated in the context of the prototype FWIS implementation. The use of the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts are illustrated by describing the components comprising the FWIS .
