Item Open Access Permanency From the Perspective of Aboriginal Youth Who Have Aged Out of Care: An Exploratory Study(2014-05-01) Stangeland, Jade; Walsh, ChristinePermanency has been recognized as an important goal for children and youth in government care. However, two groups for whom the meaning of permanency has generated considerable debate are youth in foster care, and Aboriginal children and youth. A comprehensive literature review revealed that permanency for youth is both necessary and achievable, and cultural considerations were critical in achieving permanency. The purpose of this study was to explore the views of Aboriginal youth who have aged out of foster care on permanency. Individual, semi-structure interviews were completed with six young adults (ages 18 to 20) and a follow up focus group was completed with three of these participants. The data was analyzed using a basic qualitative, pragmatic approach. This analysis revealed that the goals of permanency and culture have been set up as competing priorities rather than as complimentary objectives working in harmony for the well being of Aboriginal children and youth in care.
