The programs, consisting of one-year certificates leading to a Master of Nursing degree, are the first in Canada to be offered in a technology intensive format. They meet the accessibility needs of healthcare professionals whose work and other responsibilities prevent them from pursuing graduate education. The certificates are available in four specialization areas: contemporary topics in aging; addiction and mental health; innovations in teaching and learning; and leadership for health system transformation. Each graduate certificate can be earned alone or combined for credit towards the MN degree. The impact of the program on educators and students is significant. Student access in the graduate programs of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Calgary will increase by 300%. Teaching in the new technology intensive program requires educators to critically examine their teaching and learning practice; adopt blended T&L technologies; and closely consider SoTL principles to support student learning. Student admissions are currently underway for the first cohort to join the program in Fall 2019. We will share lessons learned from program design including partnerships with AHS, the UCalgary’s Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, the Faculty of Social Work, Werklund School of Education, Haskayne School of Business and the department of Continuing Education.Item Open Access Leadership Development Experiences of Department Chairs at a Canadian University(2021-03-16) Stawnychko, Leda; Winchester, Ian; Marshall, Dru; Eaton, SarahOne of the many important debates in the post-secondary sector is whether scholars are fit to lead universities. Effective leadership is important in all settings but particularly at these institutions because of their size, complexity, and dynamic social, economic, and political contexts. Having a thorough understanding of this context is considered indispensable for leadership success. This qualitative study explores the leadership development experiences of 17 department chairs at one research-intensive university located in Alberta, Canada. Department chairs are key university leaders who are accountable for many education, service, and research activities; they act as crucial links between institutional strategy and its implementation. Their development merits careful attention because entry into these leadership roles requires no prior training or experience, making them the least prepared leadership group at universities. The study findings revealed that leadership networks play a central role in the development of these leaders. These networks serve as valuable instruments that help them to enter and understand their role, develop new skills, and practise self-reflection. Furthermore, these networks facilitate the transformation of these scholars from researchers and teachers to academic leaders. Prior to this study, the influence of leadership networks on the development of academic chairs was largely unknown and had been only marginally described in the literature.Item Open Access Leadership Development Experiences of Department Chairs at a Canadian University(2020-02-06) Stawnychko, LedaThe presentation includes the preliminary findings of a doctoral research study that explores the leadership development experiences of department chairs at a West Canadian university. It also examines department heads’ perceptions about the efficacy of leadership development programs available to them. The epistemological stance that guides the study is constructionism, which recognizes that knowledge is uniquely constructed by each individual and that learning is contextual and occurs through creative experimentation. A case study design is being used and interviews with faculty members who are currently in the role of department chair will be conducted until saturation is reached. The findings of the study will inform the kinds of leadership development programs that would be most helpful to faculty aspiring to accept future department chair appointments. The research also seeks to gain insights and offer a top five set of recommendations for new leadership development programs, or adjustments to programs already available. The study will contribute to academic leadership literature by exploring the leadership development experiences of department chairs in a post-secondary context in a midwestern Canadian university. Strong and adaptable leadership is particularly important in postsecondary settings due to an increasingly complex and dynamic social, economic and policy context. There is no literature concerning department chairs originating in western Canada, and what is available, predominantly from the United States, indicates that most postsecondary intuitions do not provide formal training to department chairs. This area of research is important because the actions of department chairs can dramatically affect a university’s effectiveness and productivity. The study explores how faculty members in the role of department chair at a publicly-funded Canadian university experience leadership development. It also examines department heads’ perceptions about the efficacy of leadership development programs available to them. The epistemological stance that guides the study is constructionism, which recognizes that knowledge is uniquely constructed by each individual and that learning is contextual and occurs through creative experimentation. The central research question asks: What experiences of department chairs were the most helpful to learning what the role entailed? Leadership is an essential determinant of success in organizations. Strong and adaptable leadership is particularly important in postsecondary institutions due to their increasingly complex and dynamic social, economic and policy contexts. Key leadership positions in the academy are department chairs who are the crucial link between the administration and faculty accountable for many aspects of education, including curriculum, research, student enrollment, budgets, and personnel. Despite their critical importance, most intuitions provide them with no formal training, making them the least prepared leadership group within postsecondary institutions. The study follows a qualitative case study design that includes a literature review, document analysis and semi-structured interviews with 19 department chairs. The findings will contribute to the academic leadership development literature originating in Canada and will inform the kinds of leadership development programs or initiatives that would be most helpful to faculty aspiring to accept department chair appointments.Item Open Access The Power of One: Women Helping Women in Big and Small Ways(2020-03-11) Stawnychko, Leda; Valdivia, ErikaWorkshop presentation at the International Women's Day 2020 "An Equal World is an Enabled World" conference sponsored by the Werklund School of Education.
