Therefore, the use of "green energy" sources (solar, wind, hydro etc.) is being strongly supported and is growing at an increasing rate. Photovoltaic power generation is becoming quite popular and less expensive with the advancements in manufacturing technology. Photovoltaic power generation is being encouraged for both stand-alone and grid-connected applications. This thesis presents the modeling and simulation of two very simple, economical and efficient maximum power point trackers (MPPTs) used for a polycrystalline PV array charging a battery with a buck converter. First, a very simple MPPT controller with no proportional-integral (PI) regulator is proposed. This has the main advantage of having no tuning parameters. Second, a new way to determine the reference voltage for the Constant Voltage Tracking (CVT) controller is presented. The new method, Difference CVT, considerably increases tracking efficiency of the CVT algorithm.
