Item Open Access 2006 California Problem Gambling Prevalence Survey(2006-08) Volberg, Rachel A.; Nysse-Carris, Kari L.; Gerstein, Dean R.; National Opinion Research Center (NORC)The goals of the 2006 California Problem Gambling Survey were to assess the extent and impact of problem gambling among adults in California, identify the groups in the population most affected by the disorder, and provide information about the public’s knowledge of available resources for addressing gambling problems. A telephone survey of 7,121 Californians aged 18 and over was carried out between October, 2005 and April, 2006 to assess gambling behavior, gambling-related problems, and demographics as well as other correlates of gambling problems. The main purpose of this survey was to determine the scope of problem gambling in New Mexico and to identify the groups in the population most affected by the disorder. A sample of Oregon residents aged 18 and over (N=1,500) was interviewed between October and December, 2000, about the types of gambling they had tried, the amounts of money they spend on gambling, and about gambling-related difficulties. It was hosted by the Alberta Gaming Research Institute.Item Open Access Establishing treatment services for pathological gamblers in Manitoba : report to the Manitoba Lotteries Foundation(Manitoba Lotteries Foundation, 1993-06-08) Volberg, Rachel A.The Manitoba Lotteries Foundation commissioned this study to identify the prevalence of possible pathological gambling among the general population of the province. The results of the survey showed that 1.3% of Manitoba residents aged 18 and over can be classified as possible pathological gamblers. This is a similar rate to that found in other jurisdictions. Included is a discussion of the methods used to develop information presented in the report, a review of the literature on the treatment of pathological gambling, and a discussion of current infrastructure of treatment services in Manitoba. This is the first adolescent study initiated and funded by a state lottery and the first study that allows comparisons of adolescent and adult gambling involvement in the same jurisdiction. Data from this Native American sample are directly comparable to data from the general population of North Dakota as well as to data from gambling surveys completed elsewhere in the United States.
