Abstract
In this thesis I argue that Oliva Sabuco was the author of the New Philosophy of Human Nature, based on the book's medical content as well as her use of language and feminine metaphors. Herein the medical theories of Sabuco are compared with the Canon of Medicine, by Avicenna, and The Controversies, by Francisco Vallés, in order to establish the medical and historical origins of Sabuco's inspiration. The results of this thesis are the following: first, it presents a new perspective related to the concepts of mothers in New Philosophy, that supports the argument in favour of Oliva; second, an identification of the sources in the Canon that are related to the influence of the moon on the humours and liquids of the world; third, a demonstration of how Oliva offers her own solutions to Vallés' polemics, in spite of the fact that Oliva was not formally educated in medicine.
