Abstract
The dynamic environment of technology advancement, market change, and global competition give emphasis to value as a strategic asset. As a concept focusing on value, lean can be applied to Product Development Processes (PDP) to improve value creation management. In this research, lean principles are examined for their fit with PDP. Value specification is discussed by decomposing general value concepts into categories. Value drivers and waste drivers in a value stream are redefined to clarify how value is created directly. A review of the issues of risk and motivation management, inventory, and variability reveals how, when properly managed, value is created in lean PDP. Further, it is concluded that a combination of pull and push systems are the best option to control product development projects. Value centric knowledge management and a holistic view are defined as two pillars in pursuing perfection. A "core value creation management actions model" is proposed to reveal how value is created at a fundamental level, and point out the most important management actions and their relationships for value creation in lean PDP. It is concluded that by enhancing the core value creation actions at a fundamental level, development teams can be managed to build stronger and leaner value flow in complicated product development systems. A "value creation cell" model is proposed as a conceptual approach to describe an atomic value creation mechanism, providing a quantified lean approach to help allocate resources and properly control lean product development systems. A proposal is made for how the value creation cell concepts can be integrated into a design game for validating the cell model. This thesis develops ideas for lean value creation management actions in PDP, and a to-be-validated conceptual framework of lean value creation cell so as to give insights about how designers by taking proper management actions can optimize the development process and realize continuous creation of value in lean product design.
