Abstract
In response to increased urbanization, population growth, and changing climate patterns, cities and regions all over North America are implementing food strategies, including the Calgary Regional Partnership’s (CRP) Food Secure, released during the spring of 2017. This strategy aims to ensure the Calgary Region has access to a local food supply over the 60 next years. However, regional stakeholders and decision-makers lack a cross-scalar information system to support strategy implementation and monitoring over time. The purpose of this research was to identify the types of spatial data resources needed to support regional decision-makers in food strategy implementation, monitoring, and management. A number of significant spatial data gaps as well as a lack of stakeholder understanding about the need for relevant data emerged from key regional stakeholder questionnaires done for the CRP. The results of this research identify the types of spatial data and decision-support requirements that could be integrated into the CRP’s current geographic information system (GIS) to create the capacity for food strategy decision-support.
