Abstract
Cold weather, great distances, low population and high transportation costs in the North West Territories (NWT); make it a desirable location to use platooning technology. This research evaluates the performance of the Hay River Bridge, which is located on the main road from Edmonton to Yellowknife, under platoons of connected trucks. The bridge load evaluation under platoons of two, three and four Alberta Non-Permit (NP) legal trucks shows enough capacity using PC-specific permit conditions. Furthermore, the bridge load evaluation under a platoon of two Alberta legal NP trucks shows enough capacity with PS-specific permit conditions. The bridge is able to tolerate platoons consist of three or four reduced weight of Alberta NP trucks under PS permit conditions.
