Abstract
Blood units that are used for transfusion can be stored for a limited amount of time. The blood that is older than 42 days must be discarded. In order not to face shortage usually the oldest blood is used. But the risk of complications after surgery is growing as the age of used blood is growing as well. In this work we find the optimal policy to use blood for transfusion for two blood types. The main goal is to find the policy that will reduce the shortage and minimize the risk of complications at the same time. For this purpose, we use two methods (Linear Programming and Approximate Dynamic Programming) and compare the results of two approaches.
