dc.description.abstract | Since the early 2000s, technology has become a part of our daily lives, especially in education and literacy. In the face of this, researchers have examined the potential effects of reading and learning through digital devices. While much of the research has concluded that reading on a digital device could negatively affect reading comprehension and cognitive behaviours, especially in school-aged children, the scope and uses of digital reading are more complex than initially thought. Our current and future students use various forms of digital reading daily and will require even more digital skills as they enter a job market dominated by technology. Therefore, our educators must ensure we prepare our students for the digital future. This review advocates for including digital literacy practices in grade school curriculum. The evidence shows that our students need computer skills to encounter, engage with, curate, and evaluate digital resources. While researchers and curriculum makers have recognized the need for this type of education, educators have yet to implement it in classrooms fully. This review provides resources and frameworks that schools, teachers, parents, and educational digital technology designers can consider when implementing digital literacy practices into their student’s education. Careful implementation, including digital literacy practices, will prepare our students for their personal and professional futures. | |
