Abstract
The body of work Bear Grease & Smudge Smoke consists of three artworks: Remnants of Transference, an installation at the Nickle Gallery; Bear Smudge a performance for camera shown in an online gallery; and Spinning a Web with Bear Grease, Smudge Smoke and Moonlight, an abstracted support paper that doubles as an art object shown in an online gallery. Bear Grease & Smudge Smoke investigates the role of the artist in relation to the body, ancestral materials, site, time, and conversations of self-determination. Storytelling, visiting, and dreaming are employed as research collection in order to develop the exhibited and written thesis work. The Spider’s web and Métis worldviews are used as anchoring points in the presented works. Operating from Indigenous understandings of the world and using performance and considered material choice as a source of knowledge, this thesis work focuses on building futures that are in alignment with Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
