dc.description.abstract | In Southern Alberta in the past 15 years, at least 17 people have drowned in stilling basins attached to weirs. This study has focussed on an examination of the principle of multi-purpose use, meant to govern water development projects, and investigation of the implementation of this policy in reservoirs in and around Calgary. The major part of this study examines ways to reduce the drowning hazard now present at weirs. Four solutions were studied: the possibility of designing safer weirs; the effectiveness of imposing restrictions and regulations at weirs; the use of whitewater chutes to bypass such structures, and inexpensive means to modify hydrodynamics in the stilling basin to wash persons from the hydraulic jump. | |
