Abstract
Complicated structural and lithofacies relationships associated with Upper Carboniferous and Permian rocks within the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin make correlations difficult without reliable age control. This has been provided with conodonts recovered from selected cores in the Peace River area and from two surface sections in the Liard River area. Conodonts recovered from the lower Kindle (Permian sensu Halbertsma, 1959) indicate Serpukhovian (Lower Carboniferous) ages whereas specimens from the upper Kindle indicate Bashkirian (Upper Carboniferous) and possibly Moscovian (Upper Carboniferous). The Fantasque, which unconformably overlies the upper Kindle in the Liard River area, is dated as Roadian to Wardian (mid-Permian). A fossiliferous carbonate unit traditionally correlated with the Belloy (Permian), but herein referred to as the unnamed formation, yielded Lower Moscovian conodont faunas. Roadian to Wardian conodonts were recognized from sandy carbonates of the upper Belloy. These revised correlations of upper Carboniferous and Permian strata in the Peace River to Liard River areas will improve the understanding of the geological framework for the region.
