dc.description.abstract | Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a self-organizing, infrastructure-less network of miniature sensors. In this study, we introduce the concept of coverage confidence level and present a detailed analysis on Sensing Spatial Coverage (SSC) of WSN. This analysis aims to determine the required resources for WSN design and implementation. A detailed mathematical sensing model is proposed for photodiodes for a fire detection application. This work also considers the sensors directionality. Afterwards, an improved network lifetime definition is proposed based on the SSC analysis which is more consistent with real-world applications. Finally, a novel routing protocol known as the Lifetime Improved Collection Tree Protocol (LICTP) is proposed, and implemented. LICTP’s performance is evaluated and analyzed via simulations and experiments on a lab set-up that consisted of 25 motes. Results show that LICTP improves the lifetime efficiency by a factor of 2.3 - 2.8 in comparison with commonly used Collection Tree Protocol (CTP). | en_US |
