Abstract
Tone mapping algorithms are utilized to adapt wide dynamic range (WDR) images to limited dynamic range (LDR) displays while maintaining the images’ details. This thesis presents an analog current mode implementation that will realize an exponent-based tone mapping algorithm, including both global and local operators in the imager array periphery. It also presents a one-pass automatic exponent-based tone mapping algorithm and its associated current mode circuit implementation that was designed to avoid manual tuning needed in a previous implementation. Both of these two implementations, designed in 0.35 µm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, were simulated and tested in order to evaluate their quality. Objective assessments and detailed comparisons show that the low power and low area features of these hardware implementations make them good choices for low power and low area WDR display applications.
