dc.description.abstractDiane Samuels' The True Life Fiction of Mata Hari was presented at the Department of Drama at the University of Calgary, in the Reeve Theatre from November 28th to December 8th, 2006, as part of the Drama Department's 2006-2007 mainstage season. This artist's statement discusses the creation of the production from text analysis to rehearsal to performance. The research, along with the processes of design and rehearsal, spanned the period between March 2006 and December 2006. The figure of Mata Hari, as represented in the play, is a collection of countless myths. The text analysis and the context research were based on the work of biographers Russell Warren Howe, Erika Ostrovsky and Julie Wheelwright, focusing on Mata Hari's transformation from public figure to timeless legend. Finally, the techniques of director Anne Bogart provided a methodology for the creation of dynamic stage pictures and the building of the acting ensemble.en
