This Artist’s Statement is an examination of the creative process that resulted in the staging of Gwendolyn MacEwen’s adaptation of Euripides’ Trojan Women at the University of Calgary. The production ran from February 14th to February 25th, 2012. Chapter One begins with an explanation of interest in Trojan Women and a brief description of artistic goals. Chapter Two traces the historical context surrounding both Euripides and MacEwen. Chapter Three outlines the textual analysis and changes made to the text for the production. Chapter Four details the physical theatre research and its incorporation into the text. Chapter Five documents the development and discussion of the design elements. Chapter Six reflects the rehearsal process, outlining the development of the production from casting to opening. Chapter Seven serves as a retrospective, focusing on the director’s impression of the project’s successes and opportunities.en_US
