This research consists of a zooarchaeological analysis of domestic midden samples from five sites in the lower Rio Verde region in Oaxaca, Mexico. Analysis focuses on the Late Formative sites of Cerro de la Cruz and Rio Viejo, although small samples from the Middle Formative (Corozo), Terminal Formative (Yugiie) and Early Classic (Cerro del Chivo) are also studied. Faunal samples indicate a diverse resource base for Cerro de la Cruz and a somewhat diverse resource base for Rio Viejo, not surprising considering the various environmental zones in the lower Rio Verde valley. An examination of change in consumption resources through time shows evidence of over-exploitation and a shift to animal species which were more difficult to obtain.en
