This study explores the perspectives of six young women on their experiences of growing up in government care and of multiple admissions to secure care. A mixed methods approach was utilized to gather information about adverse childhood events, and the participants lived experiences. The young women interviewed reported experiencing a high level of adverse events during their childhood. Their interviews highlighted several issues growing up in care such as placement instability, quitting school early, a loss of family relationships, substance abuse, and justice system involvement. This study suggests that the significant needs that youth in care may present with might not be sufficiently met by the system of care that limits their stay in secure care to 30 days. As adults, these young women presented with limited insight, and their stories suggest that they continue to struggle with untreated trauma, poverty and instability in their lives.en_US
