This research project examines youth experiences in residential treatment. A descriptive phenomenological approach was utilized in this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 youth between the ages of 18 and 26. Consistent with the descriptive phenomenological method, analysis focused on identifying themes in each interview. These themes were then compared across interviews and common themes were identified. These included main thematic categories of factors influencing participants’ experiences, staff and peer relationships, program experiences, emotions and impact of treatment. Sub themes within each of these categories also emerged from the interviews. Primary findings indicated that more research needs to be done on understanding youth readiness for change, peer relationships in residential treatment settings, how young people conceptualize successful treatment outcomes, and how being an adolescent impacts ability to form relationships with staff. Challenging emotions are experienced in treatment and require attention as well both from research and program staffen_US
