Abstract
Symphony No. 1 is an orchestral work with a duration of twenty-seven minutes. It is inspired by the climate crisis and it evokes the relationship between humanity and nature. The piece features an optimistic conclusion that suggests musically how humankind can become a steward of the natural world. The musical ideas of the work are inspired by birdsong transcriptions, construction noise, and weather sounds. The instrumentation is double winds, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, two percussionists, harp, and strings. Research into the genre of the symphony and the relationship of other composers to the natural world as well as personal observations inspired the musical thinking. This thesis includes an introductory essay that describes the context, research, program, form, harmony, melody, rhythm, leitmotivs, timbre, and texture, as well as a bibliography and an appendix with a complete performance score of Symphony No. 1.
