In engineering design, engineers can be influenced by their previous experience, existing forms, or the economic and technological requirements of a project. This inherently places limitations on the engineer, hindering their ability to be innovative. Topology Optimization presents an approach that reduces bias. Topology Optimization can mathematically generate an optimized geometry based solely on the design requirements. Topology Optimization however, is not a popular tool in engineering design. The purpose of this research is to investigate the usage of Topology Optimization for innovation in engineering design. To achieve this, “Innovative Value” criterion is defined, and a Topology Optimization aided design process is proposed. This is then applied in two design cases. Furthermore, the optimization parameters are investigated simultaneously, determining their effect on the result. It is concluded that Topology Optimization is conditionally acceptable for innovation in engineering design. Recommendations are made towards the generation of successful optimizations based on the optimization parameters investigated.en_US
