dc.description.abstractMother Courage and Her Children is a play that has seemingly lost its place in the world. Brecht’s original intent was to use verfremdungseffekt to distance his audience from the violence that had swallowed them and use that distance to let his audience have a long, critical look at society. However, in modern Western society we have been desensitized to the sort of violence and the context that Brecht wanted critical distance from. We live in a world that the play does not anticipate. The context of the contemporary world does not necessarily allow for the Brechtian playing of Mother Courage. Therefore, a contemporary interpretation that is more in touch with the current world is required. This document examines the attempt to bring the play, and its significantly important context, to a contemporary North American audience in order to see if the words of the play still reverberate.en_US
