Improving Cross-cultural Communication In Social Impact Assessment
Abstract
Developing Ecuador’s energy resources in a sustainable manner is essential to the economic growth and socioeconomic development of the country. Energy is not the solution to development but is required for meeting basic human needs. Historically there has not been an equal distribution of the economic benefits of energy projects resulting in conflicts between stakeholders. Social impact assessment (SIA) is a mechanism intended to mitigate potential conflicts between stakeholders groups and promote social equity that had not been effective.
The objectives of this project are to identify the principles and processes of international ‘best practice’ SIA methods, identify how international ‘best practice’ SIA principles and processes deal specifically with indigenous cultures, identify three ‘in-common’ issues that conflicts between indigenous peoples and oil companies appear to have been centered around, and recommend how SIA practice could be customized to deal more effectively with energy development and indigenous peoples in Ecuador.
