dc.description.abstract | The intent of this work is to investigate the construction of the figure of the trafficker of illegal drugs in Mexican narcocorridos and its development as a result of the influence of old Spanish romances as well as Prieto’s romancero and the traditional Mexican corridos. The initial chapter will explore how the old Spanish romances constructed biblical figures that later on influenced the first Mexican romances. In the second chapter, I will analyze how important figures of the Mexican independence movement, like Miguel Hidalgo, were constructed based on the models of biblical figures in the Spanish romances. In the following chapter, I will show how the biblical figures’ construction in the first Spanish romances also influences the model of some narrative figures in the Mexican revolution, such as Francisco I. Madero and Porfirio Díaz in Mexican corridos. The final chapter will discuss how the medieval model of creating biblical figures in the old Spanish romances also played a role in the construction of the narrative figure of narco traffickers in narcocorridos. Lastly, as a conclusion, I shall present how the link between old Spanish romances and narcocorridos, along with the use of images and the practice of rituals, transfers medieval religious principles to transform one of the most popular Mexican cartels, Cartel de los Caballeros Templarios of Michoacan, into what can be defined as “narco-secta”. This is done most likely with the purpose of attempting to legitimize their illicit activities in order to create a firm connection with the people of the state. | en_US |
