Made in China examines my inner journey since I moved to Canada from China in September 2016. In this series, I am investigating my ongoing negotiation of identity and gender norms as I acculturate to my new setting in Canada. Incorporating autoethnography with studio-based art practice and research, I have photographed myself to create a female figure to visualize the tensions between Chinese and Western constructions of ideal femininity. Through being both the photographer (i.e., the speaking subject), and the model (i.e., the spoken about object), I explore the potential of using self-portraits as my contribution to the discourse of female empowerment. My photographic research represents my exploration of self-identity, female sexuality, and female subjectivity.en_US
