With increased focus on renewable generation, new ways to maximize the existing capacity of an electrical grid are being investigated. One method is to increase the transmission line capacity by using dynamic thermal line rating, or DTLR. One problem facing widespread implementation of DTLR is how to select which transmission lines would benefit most from DTLR installation. Traditionally, DTLR is only applied to transmission lines that are thermally rated. This thesis expands this notion by considering the relationship between conductor temperature and resistance to increase the rating of longer lines (over 80 km) that are not thermally limited. This thesis also determines which transmission lines are suitable for DTLR, based on the maximum thermally limited line length, and investigates how this length changes when DTLR is applied. This thesis then combines the two methods for DTLR to demonstrate the capacity increase for all lengths of transmission lines.en_US
