In this thesis, I explore the relationship between pedagogy and the cultivation of memory. I use three examples from a Grade one/two classroom: the use of family artifacts, the study of grain elevators and other Canadian landmarks and the work of Aboriginal artist Norval Morrisseau, in order to show how memory lives and how student work is affected by it. Some of the questions explored within include; what kind of pedagogy allows for and fosters the cultivation of a child's individual and collective memory? How can teachers help children see the world as something larger than them? What questions open up these discussions and invite this type of conversation? Finally, what happens when students are given the time to live with a topic, lose themselves on a journey and cultivate an understanding and a memory of their experience in the world?en
