dc.description.abstract | Prepared in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the M. E. Des. degree in the Faculty of Environmental Design, the University of Calgary. The proposal presents a preliminary architectural programme developed in consultation with Blackfoot Band Council representatives. The general objectives of the design development are based on the idea of cultural conservation/ education/inspiration. As an expression of Siksika Band objectives and perspective, the attempt must be made to understand these words as one single idea. Major functional elements include facilities for: exhibition, preservation, dramatic performance, social functions, seminars, library and archival research, and arts and crafts activities. Spatial requirements were estimated and specific design objectives formulated. Design drawings and a large scale model of the proposal have been prepared. The proposal is presented herein as an interim step in actual project development. The building has been designed to sit in physical and symbolic harmony with its environment and cultural context. The form fits solidly into the Bow River escarpment, while its open axis plan maintains dramatic views of the river, valley, plains and mountains. The simple exposed structure, natural materials, and fluid, sheltering roof lines clearly echo traditional design elements. The proposal illustrates an approach to basic museum design issues that accommodates a highly flexible exhibition program coupled with an active cultural studies and development program. | |
