Santa market is a traditional market located in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is generally understood as a commercial retail place for trading and market activities of household goods and services. Yet, following its 30 years oflife and evolution, Santa can be regarded as more than a place for satisfying the needs and wants by means of shopping. For some users who spend longer hours at the market such as the merchants, Santa had grown into a place for working and temporary living. Thus, the market users, the time spent and the activities during their time at the market have become the main concern addressed in this MDP. Daily activities performed within seven to fifteen hours spent at the market by the merchants have become as important as the main trading and market activities. Moreover, the additional presence of family and relatives of the merchants at the market has temporarily shifted the family life into the market and has contributed to the shaping of the Market life. This MDP accommodates the co-existence between the market activities performed by the merchants and the shoppers and the daily activities performed by the merchants and their relatives as they are important aspects that create the Market life and its dynamics. This MDP proposes an alternative design for the renovation program of Santa, for consideration by the Jakarta Market Authority and for the future design of traditional markets in Indonesia.
