Alberta's shift to renewable electricity generation is crucial for achieving a net-zero grid by 2050. But the existing transmission infrastructure, designed for fossil fuels, is inadequate for decentralized renewables, necessitating upgrades for grid stability and reliability. The Alberta Ministry of Affordability and Utilities' October 2023 Transmission Green Paper outlines areas for reform, including cost allocation, line loss responsibility, non-wires solutions, congestion policy, and intertie utilization. This research project examines what policy tools can effectively incentivize investment in transmission infrastructure for renewable energy integration in Alberta.
